SANTA MONICA, California — October 23, 2026. This original California58 Local report is based on an identified public agency record. Proposals, meeting notices, campaign material and estimated outcomes are carefully distinguished from decisions and certified results.
What milestone did the city announce?
Santa Monica’s October 6 release says the Airport Conversion Project is moving into the fourth of five community planning phases. The city scheduled an unveiling of an Illustrative Master Plan on October 17 at Memorial Park Gymnasium. As of October 23, that advertised event date has passed. The announcement is evidence of the planned unveiling, not independent confirmation of attendance, attendee feedback or approval of final construction plans.
What does an illustrative plan show?
According to the city, the materials show how a prospective park could be organized, how visitors might move between its areas and how design views could look from different locations. Earlier framework planning drew on City Council and community input, including a February–April survey with more than 4,200 responses about potential park districts.
Can construction begin immediately?
A master plan, especially in an intermediate design phase, is not a building permit, funded construction contract or environmental authorization. Future phases may address more detailed design, feasibility, costs, environmental review and decision-making. Residents should distinguish the long-term vision from approved site work.
How can the public follow up?
Look for the city’s actual published phase-four materials and follow-up outreach opportunities. Questions about accessibility, long-term maintenance, recreational space, natural habitat and transportation should be grounded in the latest drawings and adopted documents.
